Could this have happened years ago?

In the news today.



The Indian government has reacted angrily to the stabbing murder of an Indian man in Melbourne at the weekend.
Australian permanent resident Nitin Garg was stabbed in a park at West Footscray as he walked to work at a nearby fast food outlet.
The 21-year-old staggered to the fast food store before he collapsed. He died later in hospital.
The Indian government says the killing of the accounting graduate has generated deep anger and could affect bilateral ties with Australia.

Could this violence have happened years ago?
I have to say that it was very unlikely.
So, are we becoming more violent, or is just the way we are living today that brings these violent acts of senseless destruction of a human life possible?
